The Proposal Process
Once you have selected your book topic, you will need to submit a proposal for PennWell's consideration. Your proposal should include:
* May be submitted online with the Author Questionnaire
The more information your proposal contains, the easier it is to assess the material's value and potential market. When your proposal materials are received, they will undergo a technical review by industry representatives. These reviews give us feedback on the uses for the material and any alterations to the proposal that could give it more focus.
If the industry review is favorable, the proposal will then go through an internal review for fiscal considerations. This is where information such as number of manuscript pages, figures, tables, color or black & white photos, and other production aspects become important. Please give us as close an estimate as possible. If you have not yet produced any chapters, it is best to overestimate the number of equations, pages, or figures the manuscript might contain. Once a budget is set, it's much easier to delete excess materials than to make room for a 25% increase.
This review process could take as long as two months, so please be patient. We will try to move through it as fast as we can, while still gaining good feedback. If the final proposal is approved, you will be offered a contract for your manuscript and a delivery schedule will be discussed.
