Reprints, Second Editions, and Future Projects
We hope you will be bitten by the writing bug and will want to try your hand at a new project. We may approach you about a specific topic that is in your area of expertise, or you may have your own new idea. Then the entire process begins again.
But even if you don't write another book, we will need your skills in the future. About three months before the first printing or press run is depleted, your editor will contact you. If you have minor corrections such as spelling changes or small word substitutions we can make them at this point. We cannot change the page order or layout. These are classified as major changes and can occur only if your book goes into a second edition.
A second edition is an expanded, sometimes rewritten version of the original book. New editions normally come out three to five years after the previous edition and should contain at least 25% new or additional material. At this point you are free to make any changes you wish.
The process of writing a new edition is almost like writing a new book. Another contract may be offered, although the provisions of your original publishing agreement can extend to subsequent editions. New artwork is drawn, text pages are redesigned, and a new index is set. We change the cover art so the book has a brand-new look, and the marketing department develops new promotional pieces. The writing is usually much easier than the first edition because you draw upon so much that is already printed, but the process is just as interesting.
From contract to second edition your sponsoring editor will be your liaison with PennWell Corporation. Your editor will answer your questions, find solutions to your problems, and shepherd your book through the stages of development. You work together as a team to produce the best possible product available. We hope you will remain a winning team for many books to come.
